What is taking me busy – Pomotux!

May 12th, 2009 bodom_lx No comments

I’m currently pressed by my University life, that’s because I don’t post often.
There are 3 big projects for this semester: a C compiler, a dynamic website using Java Servlets and JSP and the most interesting one: a C++ program for Software Engineering Project course.
I’m working with other two collegues on a task manager for people using the Pomodoro Technique by Francesco Cirillo.
The project is called Pomotux and is under development following strong software engineering methodologies (Scrum@Xp). Pomotux is under construction since 2 months and uses technologies such as SQLite to store and play with tasks. The interesting fact regarding our data structure choice is that we are also using a framework for obtaining ORM, called LiteSQL.

LiteSQL is a C++ library that integrates C++ objects tightly to relational database and thus provides an object persistence layer

LiteSQL is still young and immature but powerful enough for our scope. We are also happy to provide feedback to their developers, that are ready to help us. They even wrote a patch for us!
Pomotux is reaching an unexpected stability. Unexpected because it is written by 3 young people that come from a light Java experience and saw C++ 3 months ago. It works under Linux and its graphical interface uses QT 4.5.0. It should work on any *NIX variant that meets dependencies, but also under Windows with some light modifications.
It will support just the basic features of the technique (unfortunately we don’t have the time to fully work on it) but it’s ready for expansions such as team support and statistics.
We will be happy to release the sources as soon as we finish the course, hoping that people will find it useful and that some serious programmers take it and make it the perfect tool for Pomodorians :) I will also contact the author of the Pomodoro Technique when we release it.

Back to Archlinux

After a short period with Slackware, I took the decision to switch to Archlinux again. I’m using it since one month and I’m very happy about the stability it finally reached. I encountered no freezes using it on my macbook (take a look on their interesting wiki page for info).
I hope that this will last forever :) I’ve always found Archlinux, its philosophy and its package manager the best combination for a Linux Distribution. Now that it is also stable, there are no reasons to keep away from Archlinux!

Fedora 10, thank you very much! (macbook review and fixes)

I’ve never been a big fan of rpm-based Gnu/Linux distributions, since I’ve always preferred the stability of Debian and Debian based distros, with their great dpkg system.
The problem with Debian on Macbooks is that I do not see both the stability and performance anymore, as I have to use Lenny/Sid. Etch is too old and I don’t have the time (*sic*) to play with it to make it work well. Lenny should be next to be released but I don’t feel the very famous stability AND lightness of Debian distributions on this release, like I was accustomed in the past years. Is this because I own a Macbook? Maybe, but a Macbook Santa Rosa is nothing more than an Intel-powered notebook with some strange input devices and a strange non-bios system :-)

Regarding Ubuntu, I believe that this distribution has become naff and really slow. See this Slashdot discussion on this topic.

Yesterday I stumbled to Scientechie review of Fedora 10, which convinced me to try it out.
The software shipped with Fedora 10 is aligned with the one provided with the other distributions: Gnome 2.24.0, kernel 2.6.27.5, NetworkManager 0.7.0 (svn) and so on. Read the release notes for more information.

Fedora 10 really surprises me, as it is the first Gnu/Linux distribution in many, many years that makes me feel again the great stability and performance of the Penguin. Therefore I’m writing this review that is also a how-to, as it contains some fixes for Fedora 10 and Macbooks.

About Me

February 17th, 2007 bodom_lx No comments

Daniel Graziotin. Also known as bodom_lx, BodomLx on the Web. Also known as Hersir in music context.

I am 22 years old (was born on 23rd April 1987). I live in San Giacomo di Laives, Bolzano, South Tyrol, Italy. I am a bachelor student in Computer Science at the Free University of Bolzano.
I’m interested in Software Engineering related topics and Internet Technologies .

I’m currently doing an internship at the Fondazione Bruno Kessler, a research organization of the Autonomous Province of Trento that promotes research in the areas of science, technology, and humanities. In particular, I’m at the Center for Information Technology – Irst, in the SoNET explorative unit.

I mainly listen to metal music and used to sing in two bands. Now I’m taking some singing lessons and I’m looking for a new band.
I spend my (very scarce) free time around with friends and colleagues. I also maintain some projects, released as free software.
I don’t like to exceed: I don’t smoke, but I make an exception when my friends ask me to meet at a Turkish bar and have a hookah. I like alcoholic drinks but I know when to stop. Most of the times.
Being a Taurus, I’m constantly looking for stability and simplicity. I’m also very determined in everything.

The following is a picture of me when I was 18. I’m really not photogenic, so this will be updated when I will have a better one.

This blog has no sense. It is neither a blog nor a website. I like to think about it in terms of projection of my thoughts on the Net. You may find stupid posts about my life, like in every blog. You may also find interesting articles and source codes, which you are welcome to comment.
It is a sort of bilingual blog: I sometimes post in Italian, I sometimes always write in my very poor English. It depends on how I feel and how much I find useful what I’m writing about.

How to contact me:

  • E-mail, Msn Messenger contact, Jabber contact, GTalk contact: Daniel bodom_lx Graziotin email

Many years ago, while I was a bittorrent tracker developer, I asked in a forum if some user would have drawn an avatar for me, without any information on my life. Two users replied, a girl and a boy, one draw an avatar and the other one a forum signature:
