BD-things reaches Netcraft top 30000 in 4 months!

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

Netcraft began to evalutate the new domain of my site on September, 23rd 2008. After one month, the blog made a jump of about 700k positions in their rankings. I thought that I could reach top 30000 in 6 months starting from the domain change .
I've just realized that I reached the target in these days. BD-things is currently at position 28850 in the "Most Visited Web Sites" according to Netcraft. I'm above www.vodafone.nl :) .
This also means that BD-things.net made a jump of 797573 positions in less than 5 months!
I'm very proud of this result, and hope that this exam session finishes soon to let me come back to post again

Opensource contribution always pays..even if a couple of years after

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

Someday two years ago I submitted a translation for an opensource project, gmail-notifier. It is a very nice notifier for Gmail accounts written in Python. I never received a response from the authors , neither I saw my translation appear in the project source, which seemed to be dead.
It was my first attempt to actively help a free software project, and I also felt demoralized because of the absent feedback.
Today I surprisingly noticed that the project is active again, and the authors cited my work and also included my translation in the source code. They "forced" me to forgive them because they released this version just for including the translations! They even published the list of the translators on their home page, telling:

In the last two years many people have contributed with the project by sending to me translations that I have never posted. The development of Gmail Notifier 1.7 is now starting, so I'm releasing this version just to include those translations and to say thank you to all the people that have supported the project.
The new translations are:
- Svenska
- Italiano (Daniel Graziotin)
- Nederlands (Dennis van der Staal)
- Deutsch (Marc Philipp, Eric Franco)
-Portuguese (Brazil) (Yguaratã C. Cavalcanti)
- Français (Thibault Martin-Lagardette)
- Czech (Václav Cermák)
- Russian (Aleksandr Chekanov)
- Polish
- Latvian (Kaspars Krampis)
- Esperanto (Abel Johannes)
- Arabic (Youssef Chahibi)
- Japanese (Satoshi Tanabe)

I took a screenshot as memory

They also included some thanks in the sourcecode.

A contribute to opensource projects is really rewarding, even if your work consists in modifying a handful of XML lines.

If you've got the time to do it, then make it!

I wish good luck to gmail-notifier team for the development of the 1.7 release, which will be written from scratch. I wish I had the time to contribute to the sourcecode, too, now that I'm able to handle some Python, but I believe I will help them to translate the program in Italian again :-)

task3.cc, let’s start from 826423

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

In just three days the new domain from my blog (and things) has changed its status from "new site" to position 826423, according to Netcraft! This is surely because of the redirection of daniel.graziotin.net (which was near top 30k) to task3.cc. I would like to reach top 50k in less than one year, and how couldn't I start in a better way than creating a new bd-thing? Stay tuned, I may decide to announce it tomorrow

New domain: from daniel.graziotin.net to task3.cc

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

As I previously announced, I purchased a brand new domain for my stuff.
The blog is changing during the months, becoming more than a blog but less than a site.
That's because I decided to buy the domain BD-things.net, because this site contains all of my things, files, thoughts, projects, publications.
The old address daniel.graziotin.net now redirects permanently here and every link should have been updated/rewritten. Please contact me if you encounter problems.
I also took BD-blog.net which points here, too, but I won't renew it the next year.
Some things are different now, but you won't notice it ;)
I obviously lost my decent position at Netcraft's Most Visited Web Sites rank list, but I don't care. It will be funny to advance with the new domain and reach a even better position!
I hope there will be a new beginning and a brand new life with BD-things!
